It was a marathon day for the President of the Republic, Dr. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim. The Office of the President took the initiative to organise, during this festive period, visits to members of four organizations which take care of the most needy and the President wanted to meet them to give them gifts. Her tour began around 9:30 am at the Women's Prison of Beau Bassin.
In a short speech, Her Excellency made it clear that we need to change our vision on former prisoners, because all religions teach forgiveness. Dr. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim also advised the residents to behave well, as behavior matters when the clemency commission reviews their records. Regarding re-integration, she asked the detainees to apply what they learned in prison and to learn from it in order not to relapse.
President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim then went to the Chrysalide Center, Bambous. This institution specializes in detoxification and reintegration of women and the homeless. She presented gifts to children and mothers fighting to get out of street hell and drugs. "Hope is allowed. When there is a will, there is a way. We want no one to fall into this hell and I say it again: you have to know how to forgive, "said Dr. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim.
The President then headed to Pointe-aux-Piments for a lunch with senior citizens. The day ended at around 15:30 with a donation of gifts and provisions to children and beneficiaries of the Dr. Idrice Goomany Treatment Centre, Plaine-Verte.
