The State House (Château of Réduit)
The State House, also known as the Château of Réduit, is the official residence of the President of the Republic of Mauritius. Situated in the heart of a 240-acre estate in Réduit, the State House is a remarkable blend of history, heritage, and horticultural beauty. Built in 1749 by Governor Pierre Félix Barthelemy David as a defensive fortress during the French colonial era, it later transformed into a stately château symbolizing Mauritius’ sovereignty and democratic governance.
A Heritage of Leadership and Culture
Over the centuries, the State House has been home to colonial governors, British administrators, and since 1992, the President of the Republic. It stands today as a living monument of political continuity and national pride. One of its most iconic landmarks is Le Temple de l’Amour, a memorial built in 1921 by Governor Sir Hesketh Bell in homage to the Château’s original founder.
The estate is also celebrated for its diverse botanical collection, featuring native and exotic plant species, peaceful water features, and panoramic viewpoints such as the famous Bout du Monde. Peacocks, deer, and various bird species contribute to the tranquil ambiance that surrounds the Château.
