


His Excellency Mr Pekka Juhani Metso, Ambassador of the Republic of Finland, presented his credentials to His Excellency Mr Dharambeer Gokhool G.C.S.K., President of the Republic, at the State House yesterday.
He was accompanied by his partner, Mr Jerzy Kotwica.
The meeting was marked by a very fruitful and constructive exchange, during which the longstanding relations between the two nations, established in 1973, were reviewed. Multiple avenues to further deepen and broaden bilateral partnerships were also elaborated.
With Mauritius and Finland sharing a strong commitment to addressing the global challenges posed by climate change, the need for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in view of strengthening collaboration in the preservation of forests and agricultural ecosystems, was discussed.
A keen interest in fostering greater cooperation in the education sector – keeping in mind Finland’s high quality education system and its focus on holistic development- was expressed. The proposal for exchanges and knowledge sharing opportunities in the context of national efforts in educational reform and innovation, was made.
During the meeting, President Gokhool also discussed potential areas of cooperation between Finland and the Ministry of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, with a view to establishing a framework for the development of digital solutions.
The need for an MoU is under consideration in this regard, he affirmed.
The two dignitaries also elaborated on the need for strategic marketing initiatives that aim at increasing tourism flows between Mauritius and Finland, and to promote deeper cultural ties.
