High Commissioner of Jamaica presents Credentials to President Gokhool

Her Excellency Mrs. Joan Thomas Edwards, accredited Representative and Plenipotentiary of Jamaica, presented her credentials to His Excellency Mr. Dharambeer Gokhool, G.C.S.K, President of the Republic of Mauritius, at the State House today.
During the meeting, bilateral ties, formally established in 1974 and which have been cordial, were reviewed.
As Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Mauritius and Jamaica face common structural challenges and vulnerabilities, particularly with regard to climate change, environmental degradation, pollution, and food security. In this context, the two dignitaries reiterated their commitment to advancing sustainable, resilient, and inclusive development.
Discussions also highlighted the importance of enhanced cooperation in the tourism sector through resilience-building and innovation.
Opportunities to strengthen cultural and people-to-people ties were explored, particularly following the “Roots, Vibes and Unity” concert held in Mauritius in August 2025, featuring Julian Marley, son of singer Bob Marley. The event was acknowledged as a vibrant expression of cultural diplomacy, with music serving as a unifying force to promote mutual appreciation.
The President of the Republic conveyed his congratulations to the Prime Minister of Jamaica, The Most Honourable Dr. Andrew Michael Holness, on his re-election for a third consecutive term.
Reflections were also exchanged with High Commissioner Mrs. Joan Thomas Edwards on Prime Minister Holness’s contribution to the education sector during his tenure as Minister of Education from 2007 to 2012, particularly initiatives aimed at improving literacy rates, expanding access to quality education, and strengthening support for children in need.
These shared educational priorities reflect values that were also central during the President’s own tenure as Minister of Education and Human Resource of Mauritius.
President Gokhool affirmed that such common ground provides a strong foundation for enhanced cooperation towards advancing inclusive and equitable development.
