Chief Justice of India pays Courtesy Call on President Gokhool

The Honourable Mr. Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai, Chief Justice of India, paid a courtesy call to His Excellency Mr. Dharambeer Gokhool G.C.S.K., President of the Republic of Mauritius, at the State House this afternoon.
He was accompanied by the Honourable Mr. Gavin Glover, SC, Attorney General of Mauritius; as well as His Excellency Mr. Anurag Srivastava, High Commissioner of India, His Excellency Mr. Vimarsh Aryan, Deputy High Commissioner of India, and other distinguished members of the Indian delegation.
Exchanges were held on Justice Gavai’s tenure as the 52nd Chief Justice of India since 14 May 2025, already distinguished by a series of landmark judgments inspired by the philosophy of Dr B.R. Ambedkar and the Indian Constitution. His work has placed particular emphasis on socio-economic justice, equality, and human dignity.
Justice Gavai is of the view that courts are not only protectors of liberty but also instruments of social transformation, tasked with dismantling structural and systemic inequalities.
He further holds the view that the Constitution must be read as a living document, interpreted by judges in light of evolving social realities rather than confined to its bare text.
The meeting enabled constructive conversations on the forthcoming Constitutional Review Commission in Mauritius; prospects for electoral reform, the protection of minority rights, India’s experience with affirmative action policies, and the broader challenges of nation-building in an evolving global context.
President Gokhool warmly welcomed the insights of Chief Justice Gavai and expressed gratitude for his willingness to share his rich experience and expertise in this regard.
As part of his visit, Chief Justice Gavai will also deliver a public lecture at the University of Mauritius in honour of the late Sir Maurice Rault, former Chief Justice of Mauritius.
This will be an occasion to further strengthen judicial dialogue between the two nations, President Gokhool affirmed.
Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to working together in the interest of the people, drawing from shared heritage and common aspirations.
