President Gokhool welcomed the Honourable Chetan Baboolall, newly appointed Leader of the Opposition, to State House this week for a cordial and fruitful exchange.
He was accompanied by his family during the visit.
President Gokhool conveyed his congratulations on his appointment.
The two discussed the role and responsibilities of the Leader of the Opposition, including its vital role as a democratic watchdog: holding Government to account, scrutinising policies and legislation, and ensuring that alternative voices and perspectives are heard in our National Assembly.
The Head of State also emphasised the importance of upholding constitutional values, democratic principles and the integrity of our institutions.
The Honourable Leader of the Opposition reaffirmed his commitment to discharging his responsibilities in the national interest, in accordance with the principles of parliamentary democracy.
