A journey into a lesser-told chapter of Mauritian history, filled with memories of La Foire!
President Gokhool welcomed Mr Faiz Hossenbocus, CEO of Al-Fah Group of Companies and author, to State House for the presentation of his book, “Marchand La Foire: The Untold Story of Mauritius’ Street Vendors”.
He was accompanied by his spouse, Mrs Farzana Hossenbocus.
Through personal memories and historical reflections, the book brings to life the sights, sounds and stories of La Foire, honouring generations of vendors, their struggles and aspirations, and the women who balanced business with family responsibilities.
It also captures the friendships, rivalries and everyday encounters that shaped market life.
Beyond commerce, La Foire emerges as a place where food, flavours, music and languages came together, reflecting the cultural diversity and shared experiences that make Mauritius unique.
In a happy twist of fate, Mr Faiz Hossenbocus also happens to be a former student of President Gokhool!
