Launch of the Commonwealth Students’ and Youth Welfare Group

I had the pleasure of sharing a few reflections on a journey that speaks deeply to the values of inclusion, recognition, and human potential at the launch of the Commonwealth Students’ and Youth Welfare Group this week.
Its President, Mr Yaaseen Edoo’s life journey stands as a strong example of resilience, determination, and what becomes possible when potential is recognised and supported.
Born with a physical disability and initially excluded from conventional educational pathways, his path was shaped by those who chose to see beyond circumstance, including educators such as Mr Rishi Bundoo and Mr Ajay Thacoor.
From there, his journey evolved into one of academic achievement, civic engagement, and international advocacy, culminating in the Queen’s Young Leader Award in 2015.
A powerful reminder of how much depends on that moment when someone decides to encourage, to open a door, and to believe in possibility.
This resonates with my own path. Coming from Plaine des Roches and walking daily to the government primary school in Roches Noires, it was my Headmaster, Mr Abdool Raman Kassenally, who encouraged my mother to support my further studies. That gesture made a lasting difference in my life.
The parallel is simple but meaningful: opportunities often begin with someone choosing to see potential and act on it.
As President, I will continue to support and encourage all initiatives that promote inclusion, youth empowerment, and equal opportunity.
Together, let us ensure that every individual is given a fair chance to realise their full potential and contribute meaningfully to our society- As One People, As One Nation
