Mauritius and Germany Reaffirm Ties and Cooperation within the United Nations Framework

His Excellency Ambassador Wolfgang Dold, Special Envoy of His Excellency Mr Friedrich Merz, German Chancellor, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Mr Dharambeer Gokhool, G.C.S.K, President of the Republic of Mauritius, at State House this afternoon.
He was accompanied by His Excellency Mr Oliver Knoerich, Ambassador of Germany to Mauritius with residence in Antananarivo, Madagascar; Ms Anthuber, Desk Officer to the Special Envoy, and Mr Marius Schneider, Honorary Consul of Germany in Mauritius.
The meeting took place in the context of Germany’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027-2028 term, with elections scheduled for June 2026. In this regard, the support of Mauritius was solicited.
President Gokhool took the opportunity to reaffirm the strong bilateral ties between Mauritius and Germany.
Both sides reviewed the longstanding and friendly relationship between the two countries, which dates back to 1968, and explored avenues to further strengthen cooperation in key areas of mutual interest.
For his part, Special Envoy Ambassador Wolfgang Dold stated after his meeting with President Dharambeer Gokhool, G.C.S.K.:
“It has been a great honour to have been received by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Mauritius. Mauritius and Germany share the same values of a world guided by rules rather than violence.
My mission here is to underscore the importance we attach to our relations with Mauritius. In these turbulent times, Mauritius stands as a close partner – a beacon of democracy and stability in the region.
We consider Mauritius a model for a society in which diversity and tolerance go hand in hand, and we strive to cooperate even more closely within the framework of the United Nations.”
