President Gokhool advocates Partnership with Media for Nation-Building

The President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Dharam Gokhool reaffirmed his wish to strengthen relations with the local media so that together, they can partner and advance towards the common goal of nation-building.
He was speaking at a New Year Tea Gathering and informal interaction attended by representatives of different media organisations yesterday at the State House in Réduit. The Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Robert Hungley, was also present.
In his address, President Gokhool underpinned his core priority is to champion the principles of democracy and cement national unity, for which he emphasised, the media remains a key partner.
Recalling that proximity with the population is his key objective, he pointed out that various innovative measures were put forward to ensure that the President remains connected with the populace.
These include: the revamping of the website of the Office of the President and the setting up of a Facebook page to keep the community abreast of the President’s activities; and the direct engagement with various segments of the civil society through outgoing and incoming visits.
Besides, Mr Gokhool shed light on the executive authority vested in the President as well as the exercise of his function alongside his constitutional responsibilities. He moreover underscored the conducive work environment prevailing within his team, which ensures the effective implementation of projects.
His continued focus for the year 2026 is, amongst others, to buttress Mauritius’s visibility on the international stage through strategic cooperation; promote technology and innovation; encourage equality and inclusion; address drug abuse and trafficking; counter the erosion of social values and raise awareness on health and wellness.
The Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Hungley listed out that priorities for 2026 relate to consolidating national unity; empowering the youth; work for the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities; and scaling up efforts to combat the drug issue.
