The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), located near the Pyramids of Giza, was officially inaugurated in Cairo on 1st November 2025 and opened to the public yesterday, 4th November.
An immense pleasure to have joined Her Excellency Mrs. Abir Alam Eldin, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt, together with members of the diplomatic corps, dignitaries, and the Egyptian community in Mauritius, at a special reception held at the Embassy in Ebene to celebrate this occasion.
A gathering that testified to the deep friendship, shared history, and cultural solidarity that unite our two nations.
The GEM is the largest archaeological museum in the world devoted to a single civilization, housing over 100,000 artefacts spanning more than 7,000 years of Egyptian history – including the golden mask, throne, and chariots of the boy king Tutankhamun.
I am confident that the GEM will open new avenues for cultural cooperation and exchange between Mauritius and Egypt.
The museum also appeals to younger generations through AI-powered storytelling, Augmented Reality (AR), and interactive educational spaces.
The GEM is a gift from Egypt to humanity and represents a unique opportunity for the promotion of global cultural tourism.
We must continue to protect not only the artefacts of our past, but also the wisdom, values, and human stories they embody.
